Can anyone recommend a good attorney in the LA area for a medical malpractice suit? Asking for a friend

Unfortunately, no. I will advise your friend to be careful with who they engage, though. Med-mal, as the lawyers like to call it, is really not that favorable to plaintiffs in California. Despite what the media and small talkers like to state, the burden of proof is weighted against the plaintiff.

A med-mal lawyer won't take your case unless it's a sure win. Further, most who are working on contingency take roughly 40% of anything won in the case (it's a graduated scale), and they usually leave you on the hook for all expenses related to the case like expert testimony. That testimony money is often an enormous portion of the cost of the case, and is often pay as you go. If you lose, you may not owe the lawyer fee, but you will owe (or will have paid for) an enormous sum in expert testimony, depositions, interviews, opinions, etc.

if you win, you pay for all of that, plus the lawyer's percentage, PLUS.... If the malpractice caused an insurance claim, the insurance has to get paid back first, as well. So, your highly unlikely million dollar claim will go to the lawyer and the insurance company. You, who suffered then pain, lost income and everything else, will likely get a pittance.

I know this from personal experience. Was told I had a rock solid case and quickly learned it was really just another money making avenue. There are entire fields of people dedicated to argue for you and against you, all while taking your money. There isn't much honest about it. Most lawyers I know outside of this racket sort of laughed and looked at me sadly when I asked for recommendations for names.

Los Angeles Divorce/Family Law Attorney recommendation

Top Comment: Maybe try Heather Graham out of Century City? My ex had had great a experience with her. I can say however that Debra Burdette out of Torrance will likely only frustrate and disappoint you. I kid, sort of, but actually, Heather Graham was fair and competent, despite representing the respondent in my case.

LA landlord & attorney here - ask me your real estate questions

Main Post:

Quick background: I am an attorney, and at one point volunteered with a legal aid org that helps folks facing eviction or uninhabitable conditions in their home. We worked out of the Santa Monica courthouse. Dealt with LA and Santa Monica rent control laws.

You could say am on the other side today, though I don't see it that way. I am a partner in a private equity group that acquires and renovates apartment buildings in LA County exclusively. In March and April, we acquired a 10 unit and a 7 unit, both city of LA. We try to acquire and improve under managed properties.

I see a lot of questions and comments here about finding a rental, how to reduce the housing shortage in LA, landlords mistreating tenants etc. I am happy to answer questions re these issues and more, based on my experience in legal advocacy, and from the landlord side. Ask away!

I’ll ask my landlord to do certain repairs, he always does a half ass job and months later issue repeats itself. Been here 10 years and has not made any upgrades. We need new carpet, kitchen floor is coming apart, the windows are old and falling apart. He is very cheap, how should I approach the situation ?

That sounds awful. How does the judge think a billionaire is supposed to fix that situation? Dress up like a bat to fight crime?

Lawyers in LA

Main Post:

I’m looking for a lawyer in LA for my upcoming civil matter. I don’t think I qualify as “low income” but I am a single person supporting two puppies and don’t have big bucks to spend. I also basically have all my court information together and I’m sure for a lawyer my case would be 20 minutes max, of work.

Does anyone know where I can find a reasonable lawyer or even new lawyer looking to get a case? I’ve tried the LA websites but nobody ever answers those numbers.

Top Comment: "20 minutes max, of work." IAAL. When I hear anyone say this, it means at least 5 hours of work and a client who won't pay because "it's an easy case." Share some more info because I bet your case is may more complicated then you can conceive of. Also, if you have any insurance that can cover the matter call your insurance company, they have to hire counsel for you if your claim might be covered.

Help finding the right lawyer in LA,CA

Main Post:

Hello,

I’m having some issues with finding or even talking to a lawyer in the city, specifically I’m in Los Angeles. I’ve been googling to the best of my ability to reach out to the right person but it has yet to help me reach anyone who can help me. My question is, how do you find a lawyer who specializes specifically to your problem out here? Calling commercial lawyers has lead to agencies out of California calling me and that’s not what I need. My issues concerning a bail bonds company and needing to remove myself as co-signer for someone I agreed to bail out naïvely for several good reasons. I’m at risk myself becoming homeless soon and want to find out what my options are from here before I no longer have a phone or resources to reach out for help. Today I was directed to a bankruptcy lawyer but it did not sound like it was a fit or like I was finding any kind of solution to my problem. I read some information that the state of California has on removing yourself as a co-signer but it involves the bail bond company to step in and they do not want to participate and have started to just ignore my messages about it. I have asked if I can just turn myself in an do time because I’m that desperate to cut ties with this but I get a lot of “I don’t know”’s when I bring it up so I have no idea how anything works. Some direction or any kind of help relating to my problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
